Project brief 3 architecture studio 1. march 2014 from Teck Wei

Part A
In Studio Assignment
The purpose of In-Studio Assignment is to allow us to explore about architectural design principle and elements through the exercises.

Requirement:
Students are required to create sequence of spaces to create a composition including ‘Threshold’, ‘Path’, and ‘Focal Point’
- Students must think three dimensionally about their design. They are required to draw a series of four perspective sketches that represent the sequence of movement and quality of requested spaces. All four sketches will present on one A2.
- There is no limit to the number of pieces used.
- Model Scale is 1:100

In this project I tried on exploring in different design element and principle, how it affects the space and shape of a certain building or installation.

Part B
Summary:

In this project we are required to design and create 2-3 space for a celebrity or VIP that is chosen by us as our client. The space has to design based on its characteristic, personality or other factors of the client using architecture principle and elements. The use of space can be multi-functional but it must not be a house.

For this project, the client that i had chosen is Jay Chou which is a famous Taiwanese singer that I admired the most.

Objectives of Project:
1. To understand and apply basic design principles and terminologies
2. Develop design skills through analysis and ‘reading’ existing buildings
3. To further the student’s ability to create and develop a conceptual narrative
4. To be able to consider objective and subjective parameters in the design process to create a space
which is practical yet poetic
5. To be able to select and make different study models (sketch, concept, diagram, section and
development models)

Learning Outcomes:
1. Design a space that embodies and expresses an idea or conceptual narrative
2. Be able to identify, articulate and apply basic design principles in spatial organization and
relationships
3. Be able to create, articulate and illustrate the poetics of spatial quality
4. Be able to produce and choose wisely among variety type of models with the aim of generating and
developing design as well as better presentation of idea
5. Advance communication skills through sketching internal expression of space, diagrams and variety type of models

Submission Requirement
 Presentation Panels - A2 Boards (2 or 3 pieces)
 Final Model Scale 1:50
 Verbal Presentation 5 minutes
 Sketch Journal inclusive of additional sketches on butter paper if applicable
 Evidence of design process and thoughts through study models to be displayed alongside final model

Reflection
In this project, I had researched and studied about the client that I had chosen and thus mind-mapping the information I had from him. From the data, I had chosen to start with Jay Chou's personality as my design concept, thus creating spaces for him as a workshop.
Throughout the project I had learnt to express my idea and concept through designing a space with design principles and elements applied on it and how they affect the spatial organization of the space. Besides, I had also improved in visualizing what I am creating through pictures and diagrams such as producing an Axonometric Diagram which I had learnt in Design Communication class of my model and other orthographic drawings. It might not be a very good one but practice makes perfect.
Lastly, I found that critical thinking is very important in catching a certain importance in all of these information and thus extracting out the one that I can explore in, or with the most potential of exploration because that I had a really hard time choosing which characteristic of Jay Chou to explore on and design my model through it thus delaying the whole progress of the project. I would try my best not to be in the same situation like this in my future projects.

The final project of Building Materials is in a group of 5 persons, we are required to find a site and determine the construction materials used on there.

Objectives of Project:

  • To introduce various types of building materials that are being used in the construction practice.
  •  To create an understanding of the choices designers makes in choosing the building materials based on the properties.
  • To further understand the physical and chemical properties of the building materials being used in existing buildings/spaces.
  • To expose students to standard construction names/terminologies for materials in a space/ building.

Learning Outcome:
• Produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties.
• Identification of various types of building material (Finishes and Structural).
• Understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building.
• Understand the appropriateness of material used in context several factors occupancy, concept, climate.
• Acquire analytical skill in understanding selection of building materials for a building/design.
• Understanding of application/ installation of material as finish and structural material (simple construction).

Submission Requirement:
1 Mood Board
2-3 Pieces of A2 Presentation Board
1 Individual A2 Presentation Board

Site
大上海-Grand ShangHai, Setiawalk Puchong

The site we had chosen is a old shanghai styled tourism/commercial area located inside Setiawalk Puchong mall. The purpose of the site is to rebuild and reminisce the Shang Hai city on the history. The shops here is has a very unique design and architecture.

As the site was too big, we decided to choose a main street which contains the most variety of material.

Reflection:
Throughout the project, we had searched a few places to be chosen as our site for this project. After getting the comment from our tutor, we finally chosen the Grand Shanghai for our project site. One of the reason that we choose here as our site is the reminiscing feeling and the uniqueness of the site as it was created to represent the old chinese culture. We had went to the site a few times for our material exploration and to obtain required information such as the orthographics of the site.

Thanks to the help of our tutor ms Ann on tutoring and giving us suggestion all the time, we had successfully able to identify the required amount of materials on the site. Besides, we had also faced a few problems while working on the site such as the site was too big and too complication to draw as for our level of skills, the site was a private site and once our drawings were confiscated and thus we had to send an official letter to the management to carry our work on there and etc.
Thanks to all our member's hard work and we successfully overcome all the problem we faced and thus completing the project.

In this project, we are basically required to produce an Exterior Two Point Perspective and Interior One Point Sectional Perspective of the Farnsworth House we had designed earlier.

Reflection
I had started free hand perspective drawings since foundation time but then I found out there's something different with this time. I've learnt to produce perspective drawings through my plans and elevations. It is more time consuming but then it is perfect in scale and proportion if there is nothing wrong with the plan and elevation, or the way you draw it.
Besides that, I've taken in my lecturer's advice which I applied too much rendering on both of the drawings.

In this project we are required to produce an Axonometric Diagram based on our plan in Project 2A.

Reflection
Axonometric Diagram is not easy as I thought until I started drawing it. But still, after spending days and nights, I've finally produced my own Axonometric Diagram using the plan, elevation and section of my previous project. For me, the hardest part is applying line weights on the drawing as I am not sure that am I right or wrong.

In this project we are required to redesign the interior of Farnsworth House and thus producing it's orthographic drawings.

Reflection
In this project, I had learnt how to produce orthographic drawings more technically. Besides that, I've also learnt of other things such as the standard sizes of furniture and constructions.

In this project, we are required to produce drawings of an object using 4 different hatching styles which is Hatching, Cross-Hatching, Scribbling and Stippling without outlining the object.

Stipling

Reflection:
In this project I had more experience on applying hatching techniques in drawings to render thus visualizing the space, item, object or others that I wanted in a proper and communicating manner.

In this project we are required to design a life capsule specifically for a certain activity for 1-3 person which is to scale fully making use of the space. The main objective of this project is to allow us to learn more about human scale and proportion to a space, or a space for certain activity to make full use of the space without wasting, creating a space which is very specific and thus understanding how it affects our design.

Group Members:
Cheah Teck Wei
Chew Ung Heng

Objectives of Project:
1. To further the student’s concern about elementary user needs
2. To introduce and create an awareness of scale and proportion of the human body
3. To introduce the role of human behavior in shaping the space
4. To explore how human anthropometry and ergonomics relating to space

Learning Outcomes:
1. To explore objective parameters of design process through solving real-life architectural problems
2. Be able to distinguish and discern the role of scale and proportion in the relationship between the
human body and a designed space or enclosure
3. Understanding of human factors to the design of space (its size, shape, and how appropriate it is
for the task) to improve comfort, safety, and productivity
4. To explore the relation of form and function

Submission Requirement:
 Presentation Panel A2 Boards (1 or 2)
 Model (Refer to your lecture for scale and type e.g. section, detail model)
 Verbal Presentation 5 minutes

Process
After some brainstorming session, we decided to create a capsule specifically for Boxing and Kick-Boxing.

After measuring and researching for the required measurement for the activities, this is our final product.

The entrance of the Capsule, designed based on the fighting ring of boxing.

Reflection
In this project I had more understanding about the relationship between human body scale and proportion towards a designed space as how the size, activity, shape and the minimal size to certain conformity affects the design. Also, through the designing process I had learnt to solve problems we had faced. As in overall, I had more experience on what is a space and proportion.
