Architecture Design Studio 1 :Dreamscape of Space - HIDEOUT (AUGUST 2014)

The Final project of Architecture Design Studio is divided into two parts : Part A is to create a site model based on the architecture of a movie in a group of 5 and Part B is to create a model based on a client's personality, hobbies and etc which fit in the site and movie.

Group mates as last project.

Part A - Site Model ( INCEPTION )
The movie we had chosen as our site is INCEPTION by Christopher Nolan. The architecture in the movie is mainly Paris Architecture.
In the movie, they can control their dream after consuming some med such as to changing the landscape in the dream and etc.

The scene where they control the landscape in the dream, causing building rising and moving.

The mirror is placed on behind to create an optical effect of inclined buildings, as in the movie. All the building is made with detailed architecture elements in Paris. [ Scale 1:50 ]

Part B - Dreamscape Space for YAO MING ( my client )

In the part B of final project, I had chosen YAO MING as my client as I am very interested on its unique height - 229cm and having some imagination about how the building should be.

Objectives of Project :
1. To further he students ability to create and develop a conceptual narrative.
2. To introduce and create an awareness in understanding the dimensional requirements of the
human body (anthropometrics and ergonomics)
3. To explore and apply basic design principles and terminologies.
4. To further the student’s ability to create and develop a conceptual narrative
5. To be able to consider objective and subjective parameters in the design process to create a space
this is practical yet poetic.
6. To explore how the selection and application of materials in relation to the sensory experience of
space.
7. To be able to select and make different study models (sketch, concept, diagram, section and
development models)

Learning Outcomes :
1. Design a space that embodies and expresses an idea or conceptual narrative
2. Be able to identify, articulate and apply basic design principles in spatial organization and
relationships
3. Be able to create, articulate and illustrate the poetics of spatial quality
4. Be able to produce and choose wisely among variety type of models with the aim of generating and
developing design as well as better presentation of idea
5. Advance communication skills through sketching internal expression of space, diagrams and
variety type of models

Submission Requirement :
Presentation Panels - A2 Boards (3 pieces)
 Final Model Scale 1:50
 Verbal Presentation 5-10 minutes
 Sketch Journal inclusive of additional sketches on butter paper if applicable
 Evidence of design process and thoughts through study models to be displayed alongside final
model

After researching and understanding YAO MING's life, I had came out with the my concept : STRUGGLE - ADAPT - BREAK OUT.
People nowadays only notice about YAO MING's achievement in basketball career as he had the height advantage on playing basketball, but not much of them know about how much he had been through until he achieved such achievement. Thus, my main approach of this project is creating spaces based on his lifetime experience since he was small, showing the phases he had been struggling through, the disadvantages from his height, what has brought to him because of his height and so on.

This is where I failed last semester and I had worked harder this time to overcome what I am weak on. On last semester, I had a really hard time getting an idea and design something for my client causing me having less confident when showing my idea to my tutor. In this semester, I tried my best and showing my tutor every week for some advises. Successfully this time I had came out with a design thanks to my tutor and friends for different idea and comments.
This time I manage to complete my work better than last semester, having a proper idea that approved by my tutor, having enough time to complete my board. Even if the results wasn't as good, I have no regrets.
I have done my best.
