Project Title: Image of The City

Kevin Lynch The Image of the City

Introduction
Students are required to present an in-depth and analytical research study on the designated topic. Students are to explore the image of a city based on Kevin Lynch’s most famous work, The Image of the City (1960). The project consisted of 2 parts; the first is to identify Lynch’s 5 elements; path, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks within a selected city and the second part is to produce an essay with a cognitive mapping of the city.

Objectives of Project:
1. To provide critical perspectives on key issues within the contemporary discourse of architecture, through integration of case-studies and theoretical studies
2. To enhance the understanding of the complexity of architecture and the ability to undertake independent research

Learning Outcomes of this Project:
1. Analyse architecture and urban forms in relation to relevant architectural theories
2. Analyse and critique the relationship between architecture and its social, cultural and intellectual context
3. Produce, orally and in writing, a critical interpretation of architecture and urbanism in relation to relevant theories within the contemporary discourse of architecture

Reflection:
Through this project, I have understood what are the elements that creates one's perception and memory towards an urban city, which is very important and useful for me to be applied to my Design Studio Projects. Not only that, it enhances my theories and thinking toward what makes Architecture, and what is an Urban.

SYNOPSIS SUBMISSION
Besides the project, we are required to submit a synopsis based on a reading material given to us every two weeks, hence producing a reaction paper about the topic.

Introduction
Community Service Initiative is a new module introduced to us aimed to foster a sense of awareness and care towards the community by engaging and participating in community service project in a group of 26 members. Our group has chosen dog adoption and fund raising for an organization called LASS (Lost Animals Soul Shelter) as our mission in this project. Our target is to raise funds by selling merchandise and create awareness among the community by organizing events.

Objectives
-  To inculcate a sense of social responsibility in students
-  To promote the culture of caring and respect towards all members of society
-  To make them responsible citizens of this country
-  To understand the community around them

Summary of project

Before we have started in fund raising and event organization, we had attended 2 workshops provided by LASS to brief us about how to approach, take care and interact with the stray dogs, as most of them are afraid of human as they happen to be abused. We had close interactions with the dogs by giving them bath and cleaning their shelters. Throughout the workshops, we had understood how do they feel and behave according to their body language, such as alert, anxiety, angry, or comfortable.
After the workshops, we are divided into smaller teams for different work. The design team has designed a series of T-Shirt for fund raising, flyers to be distributed to promote our event. As a member of the crew team, I was assigned to distribute flyers and to explain our campaign to the people around. We had targeted a few places with more people to distribute our flyer in a more efficient manner, such as SS15 outside Taylor's College, Sunway University entrance. The flyer distribution is a success as we are able to attract people to stop down and listen to our campaign, not all are interested but there are some positive feedback. Besides that, each of us are given a target of selling our T-shirt to collect funds.
Moreover, we had organized a campaign in Central Park, One Utama where there are a lot of people bringing their dog there for a walk every weekend. A few stray dogs were bought there for adoption and some of them were successfully adopted by some kind souls. As overall the campaign was a great success that we had attracted a lot of people to understand what are we trying to do. Thanks to all efforts from the team and especially the leaders, we manged to raise fund of RM10,818 for LASS which is a lot more exceeded our target.

Reflection
Through this project, I am more aware of the issues and needs in our community and most importantly my responsibility as a student to do what I am capable of in helpnig not only the stray dogs, but those who are in need. I have understood that we cannot change the world by just ourselves, but it is all these little efforts by us that slowly make big changes towards the community and we should not give up and make excuse of.
In such a big group of 26 members, I had understood the importance of communications between members and leaders to ensure the information to be conveyed accurately as to avoid mistakes by miscommunication. One of the main reason that the success of our porject is the communication in our team that is very clear and understandable, everyone is able to carry out their work without misunderstanding. Last but not least, team work is also the core of the success of the project, that to all the leaders and members that has given full contribution to the project.
