Internship training and Report 2017

This is a module that our school Taylor's needed us to complete after Semester 4/5 passed with Design Studio 4/5 where we are required to join an Architectural Firm with chartered architect to work as intern for 2 months during our holidays. I have been selected by Arkitek N.Kang to work as an Intern after approaching them by e-mail and interview.

This is the link to my report submission
Arc2625 internship report from Teck Wei

Reflection
The internship module is really an effective and its a MUST for us as an Architecture student. It makes a huge foundation for us knowing what are we going to do after we graduate from our university. This literally helps us in knowing our path clearer whether we are really suitable or passionate to continue in this field or not, as we all know that being an Architect is never an easy job. During the internship I have met different people in an Architectural firm and in the construction field, they had gave me an eye opening at my perspective and taught me a lot of knowledge that I could never learn in the University nor in the books. The experience is what I think that is the most valuable during the internship, instead of any skills or techniques of drawing or modelling we learnt.

Project 1: Industrialized Building System

This is a group assignment which predominantly relates to the topics of Industrialised Building System (IBS) as well as the materials’ embodied energy. Before embarking on this project students will be exposed to different types and methods of the IBS system and the calculation of embodied energy of different building materials in the classroom. First, the group has to design a 3-storey apartment block using mainly IBS components. Then, the group has to construct a physical model of the building to imitate the actual IBS construction process and to record all the process in a video.

Objectives
1. To develop students’ understanding in different types of IBS construction method.
2. To apply appropriate IBS construction method in the production of a model for an apartment building.
3. To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of IBS construction process through model making.
4. To develop students’ understanding in matters related to energy efficiency and ecological impact. 5. To foster good communication skills among group members through proper delegation of works and production of the video

Reflection:
In this project I clearly understood about IBS technology from their components to how the construction process goes. This is definitely useful for us Architects to know when we are trying to design a building which will be constructed using IBS technology.

Project 2: Construction Solutions

This assignment is aligned with the Studio Design Project (semester 4 and 5) and aims to facilitate students in the technical studies and development of their design. It deals with the analysis and establishment of the structural and the envelope systems of the student’s design to ensure that the design has logical and workable construction systems. It also encourages students to think about construction as integral part of the design and not just an afterthought. Most of the times amateur designers tend to design their spaces without thinking about the construction aspects and later on have to change and redesign their schemes due to the designs were unbuildable. This assignment was designed with the intention to tackle this issue and to increase the technical competency of students.

Objectives
1. To encourage analytical and critical study of the principles, practices and details of building technology in the student’s own design.
2. To encourage students to consider the construction aspects throughout the design process.
3. To adapt and implement the alternative construction systems into the students’ design.

Project 1:

In the first project of Building Science 2, we are required to choose a building around us and conduct a report about an analysis and research of its acoustic and lighting performance. Throughout the project, we are required to analyse critically about the building's lighting and acoustic factor.
Chosen building - Lantern Hotel, Petaling Street

Reflection
In this project, I had a better understanding about how lighting and acoustic works in a building and i believe that this will benefit me a lot when I am this career. A good acoustic and lighting consideration in a building makes the building perform better and more functional towards its usage. More than that, I've learnt in how to record, tabulate and analyse the acoustic and lighting quality in the building.

Project Two:
The project two of the module requires us to integrate the understanding of principles lighting and acoustic design into our Design Studio project. The final project for mine is different than others which is an elderly community center in PJS7, Bandar Sunway.

We are required to produce an A2 presentation board for both Lighting and Acoustic integrated design.

Reflection
I think that this project is extremely useful for us. In this project, I had the opportunity to integrate lighting and acoustic study into my design studio project which allows me to learn and integrate it immediately, which i think its a very strong way to learn and explore something. As my design is for elderly, acoustic and lighting design is very important to them due to their age and health, with this project, i am able to be more specific in designing a functional home for the elderly.

Learning Outcomes
- Analyse and discuss in depth on the selected research area based on the selected building, within the framework of contextual architecture.

- identify significant elements of Contextual Architecture through investigation on the selected building.

- Produce, orally and in writing, a critical interpretation of Contextual Architecture of the selected building.

- A paper (2000 words, double spaced)

- A power point presentation 10minutes which contains an outline of the paper covering key issues and themes explored as well as bibliography.

Research title: Application of Traditional Kampung House feature into the Deck House to achieve Thermal Comfort

Contextual Architecture Study Presentation Board

Report Link
http://www.slideshare.net/weicheah/asian-architecture-report

Reflection
In this project, I had chosen thermal comfort as my main direction of research is because that i think that achieving thermal comfort in our country is very important due to our hot and humid climate, which I think that will be very useful for my future studies and work. I found that Architecture's potential is unlimited but even though as technology blooms, we shall not neglect what people in the past has done and left for us. Their numerous explorations and findings became the foundation of us at nowadays to go further with lesser obstacles.

The ways that Architect Choo Gim Wah has truly inspired me in my future designs in terms of thermal studies, which I think that is very useful and made my design a more complete and functional design.

More than that, Ive learnt not only all these knowledge but skill and technique in report writing and presentation boards designing, which literally benefits me in my future study in every aspect.
